Vintage or antique slot machines were manufactured using wood, cast iron, aluminum or a combination of materials. The three antique slot machines on the right of the page ably display the use of these materials and a selection of designs (upright floor and countertop models). The cast iron machines were extraordinarily heavy to transport.
The primary early 20th century manufacturers of slot machines were Mills Novelty Co., Jennings, Caille Brothers, Watling, Bally, Page Boy & Dutch Boy. Many of these companies were based in Chicago as usage of these gaming machines was very popular in the mid-West. However, these novel mechanical forms of entertainment and gambling were also found in small Western mining and ranching towns as well as the big mid-West and Eastern cities and resorts.
Many of the machines were very similar in form and operation due to draconian U.S. patent laws governing gambling devices. Many machines even shared the same names even though they were manufactured by different companies.
Slot machines were designed to stand alone (upright slot machines) or sit on countertops where space was not available.
The floor standing machines typically had a large spinning color wheel in the facia of the machine. The player would bet on which color the pointer would stop at and if successful would receive a payout of coins via a cast iron opening in the lower half of the machine.
Other slot machines would operate with two, three or four wheels. The wheels would display different types of symbols - most commonly fruit, but varying widely to include bells, horseshoes and letters. The object of the game was for the player to come up with matching symbols on the different reels when they stopped spinning. The reels were set in motion by a large handle on the right hand side of the machine.
There were also dice slot machines such as the Bally Reliance or Mills Dice and horse race slot machines such as the Seeburg Grand Champion and Superior Races. in which horses would "race" down horizontal tracks with each pull of the handle or lever.
